My Desktop Apple is locked since it stopped during the downloading / installing of the latest upgrading of High Sierra a week ago.

After shutdown it reboots only as far on the activity bar where it stopped and locked then.

Rebooting in Safe Mode does not solve the problem.

Rebooting in Recovery Mode fares no better. It brings a menu of options. None of these options were accessible to me.

The next step suggested was to use Disk Utility for Mac OS X. 8 (Mountain Lion) or later. I don’t have such. I have it for Leopard!

I have been connected to Time Machine which was useful in the past but communication between Desktop and Time Machine is not now possible.

Any suggestions? I am reporting this from my iPad Pro.

One suggestion was that the disk drive could be full. I have been using iCloud for storage and no warning came to indicate it being full.

Thanks Richard.

I have tried fsck with no success. A friend has located the 10.8 install disk and I hope to pick it up from him today or tomorrow. Hopefully that will set me back on track. I will keep you briefed Tom

When you say it is “locked” do you mean the screen goes black but the computer keeps running?

If so even though you can’t see the user password field try typing in your password and hitting return! This may complete the install and get your computer up and runn8ng again.

Thanks Peter. The screen acts as if going through a regular boot up and the screen graphic behaves as it is doing that regular botot up but stops always around the same spot on this loading bar. It continue making the same sound of loading and then stops after a minute or so Nothing happens after that whether I leave it for 5 minutes or overnight.
