Connecting a USB turntable isnt a problem , but Turntables from the analogue period used to need a specific LP input on a stereo either to further amplify the sound or something like that. I think the sound from a turntable will be at a low level so it best going through a stereo amp and then to your Mac using a 2 phono out plug ( probably marked on your stereo Auxiliary) or alternatively use the headphone socket. I have found it easier to record the whole LP to a Minidisc and convert later. Same for Tapes. Anytime I start recording, the phone rings or I get distracted or something happens. Find it easy then to record into my laptop at my leisure into garageband. Connecting my Turntable via the stereo and then to Mac via a Phono leads was giving me feedback problems in Garageband. So I reverted to using the headphone socket from the stereo which solved the problem.
Anyone using an old Stereo Amplifier for the first time should remember not to plug in a Tape/CD into the LP phono input sockets, a the sound will be further amplified by the pre-amp and a loud bang may ensue. A friend of mine connects his Turntable to the Tape inputs and has to turn the volume way up to hear anything, he has to remember to do the opposite when switching to a CD.
